Volkswagen electric vehicle drivers in Europe are now able to use their compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphone as a key to start, lock, or unlock their vehicle, thanks to a new partnership with Samsung Electronics.

## Digital Key Access through Samsung Wallet

The Digital Key feature allows drivers to use their smartphone to lock, unlock, and start their vehicle without a physical key. This is made possible by Samsung's Digital Key, which supports several access methods, including ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for hands-free entry, and Near Field Communication (NFC) for tap-based unlocking and starting the engine.

| Feature | ID. Polo | ID. Cross | ID.3 Neo | ID.4 | ID.5 | ID.7 | ID. Buzz | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Digital Key | | | | | | | | | UWB Technology | | | | | | | | | NFC Technology | | | | | | | |

The feature also allows drivers to open the trunk using Remote Key Entry, and users can allow others to use the Digital Key through the Samsung Wallet to allow for multiple drivers or short-term access, such as a valet.

## Security and Convenience

The information is protected by "multiple layers of security" and backed by Samsung's industry-leading security platform, Samsung Knox. If a driver loses their smartphone with a Digital Key, they can use Samsung Find to manage or remove it remotely.

Users can also store things like credit and debit cards, ID cards, boarding passes, and more directly on Samsung Wallet, making it a convenient and secure way to manage their digital life.

## Availability and Supported Markets

Digital Key access through Samsung Wallet began rolling out to select Volkswagen EVs in Europe running ID. software 6.0.1. Vehicles running the ID. software 6.0.1 were produced on or after April 27, 2026. Supported markets currently include Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Volkswagen has yet to confirm whether it will offer Samsung Wallet Digital Key access for drivers in the US. However, it is reportedly planning to offer Apple Wallet's car key feature on upcoming vehicles.
