Audi A2 E-Tron To Launch In 2026 As Brand's Cheapest EV
Audi will launch the new A2 E-Tron electric compact car at the end of 2026. The model, previewed by the brand, will be its most affordable EV and is claimed to offer up to 401 miles of WLTP range.

Audi will launch its new A2 E-Tron electric car at the end of 2026, positioning it as the brand's cheapest EV. The model was shown in a static preview, with InsideEVs reporting details from the automaker's technology and development team.
Based on a version of the Volkswagen Group's MEB 31 architecture, the A2 E-Tron shares underpinnings with the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo and Cupra Born. Audi product manager Herman Verbeek clarified platform naming, stating that the term 'MEB Plus' is a press creation. He said the A2 uses 'Platform Variant 1,' while the Q4 E-Tron uses 'Variant 2,' and the upcoming smaller Volkswagen ID. Polo and Cupra Raval will use the front-wheel-drive MEB 21.
Dimensions and Aerodynamic Design
The car is 170.1 inches long with a 108.8-inch wheelbase. Audi focused heavily on aerodynamics to boost efficiency. In its most economical configuration, the A2 E-Tron achieves a drag coefficient of 0.24. Engineers used front air curtains, gap reducers around the wheel arches, and an active cooling-air intake that opens only when needed.
These tweaks can reduce WLTP energy consumption for the 188-horsepower model with an optional efficiency package by up to 1.4 kWh per 100 miles. That brings consumption down to 20.6 kWh per 100 miles. The efficiency pack includes an S line exterior, sport suspension, and special 19-inch aero wheels. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches.
The car features flush doors with electric handles, similar to the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which include a mechanical backup. All versions are expected to tow up to 3,527 pounds. Design details give a subtle nod to the original aluminum A2, particularly at the squared-off rear.
Interior Technology and Space
Inside, a familiar panoramic display pairs an 11.9-inch digital cluster with a 12.8-inch central screen. An augmented-reality head-up display is optional. Climate controls are on the central screen, with some functions on the steering wheel's buttons and rollers. A cloud-based AI supports voice commands, and a route planner with charging stops is integrated.
Audi introduces the Fidlock magnetic attachment system. Three modular Fidlock adapters in the center console and a matching cupholder are standard. Optional Fidlock points can be added in the cargo area. The system allows compatible accessories from other industries to be used in the car.
Another optional feature is Audi Connected Work, which can link to a Microsoft 365 business account to manage appointments, emails, or Teams calls. Wireless smartphone charging is standard, with two magnetic trays charging at up to 25 watts. The car offers substantial beverage storage, with doors holding 42-ounce bottles and the console holding 51-ounce bottles, totaling up to 1.1 gallons.
Audi positions the A2 not as a traditional small car but as a potential primary family vehicle. Interior space is generous, with good headroom even with an optional glass roof. Cargo volume ranges from 14.0 to 47.2 cubic feet, enough for three large suitcases. A small front trunk offers 0.5 cubic feet of space.
Powertrain Options and Performance
The A2 E-Tron will launch with four rear-wheel-drive power levels. All-wheel drive is not planned, as engineers deemed expected volumes too low to justify development. The output levels and key performance figures for the most powerful variant are detailed below.
| Horsepower | 0-62 mph Time | Top Speed |
|---|---|---|
| 168 hp | Not specified | Not specified |
| 188 hp | Not specified | Not specified |
| 228 hp | Not specified | Not specified |
| 322 hp | 5.7 seconds | 124 mph |
A more powerful S2 E-Tron variant is in development, potentially offering between 375 and 402 horsepower. For propulsion, Audi uses updated versions of its familiar electric motors. The brand claims the model can achieve up to 401 miles of WLTP range, aided by its efficient aerodynamic design.
