Range Tests: BYD's new Denza N8 electric SUV offers a 1,003 km CLTC range, ultra-fast charging, and a large interior screen

BYD has confirmed the new all-electric Denza N8 luxury SUV will have a pure electric CLTC range of 1,003 km (623 miles). The company also previewed the vehicle's interior, which is dominated by large screens, ahead of its expected launch in China next month.

The Denza N8 first went on sale in China in 2023 as a mid-to-large-size luxury SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. That version, available in six- and seven-seat configurations, was discontinued after less than a year due to poor sales. The new model replaces the hybrid system with a fully electric powertrain utilizing BYD's latest battery and charging technology.

Denza, the brand, calls the new N8 the king of large 5-seater pure electric vehicles. The company stated the SUV will be equipped with BYD's latest Blade Batteries 2.0, which provide what it describes as a world-leading 1,003 km pure electric range. This figure matches the total combined range of the discontinued plug-in hybrid version.

Powertrain and Performance

The electric SUV will be offered with a choice of two powertrains. One is a single rear-wheel-drive motor. The other is a tri-motor all-wheel-drive system based on BYD's e3 platform.

The vehicle is powered by a massive 130.15 kWh battery pack. According to a filing with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Denza N8 EV measures 5,150 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width, and 1,820 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,075 mm. Charging and Technology

A key feature is BYD's Flash Charging technology. Denza claims this enables the SUV to recharge from 10% to 70% state of charge in just five minutes. A full recharge, from 10% to 97%, reportedly takes only nine minutes. For more on charging infrastructure, see our fixtures page.

The interior represents a significant departure from other recent BYD vehicles. Instead of a typical floating infotainment screen, the N8 features a massive 30-inch display that spans nearly the entire width of the dashboard on the passenger side. It also includes a new 43-inch (1.1 meter) panoramic head-up display that stretches below the windshield.

Other cabin features include ambient lighting, premium seats, a wireless phone charger, and a three-spoke steering wheel. Denza describes the overall cabin as having a clean, premium feel.

Model Lineup and Availability

The new electric N8 looks nearly identical in shape and size to the larger plug-in hybrid Denza N8L, which BYD launched in June with Flash Charging technology. In September, BYD will also launch a fully electric version of that larger N8L model. Denza said the larger SUV will add a six-seat configuration to the lineup and feature a 208L super-large intelligent electric front trunk. More details are expected soon, with the new electric Denza N8 and N8L anticipated to go on sale in China next month.
