Porsche Boxster EV Spotted Charging at Tesla Supercharger
A prototype of Porsche's upcoming electric Boxster was photographed using a Tesla Supercharger in California, indicating active testing of the vehicle's

Porsche's electric Boxster prototype has been seen charging at a Tesla Supercharger in California. The sighting adds to evidence that the long-rumored sports car is progressing toward production.
Porsche has electrified much of its lineup, with the Taycan sedan and electric Macan and Cayenne models already on sale. However, its classic two-door sports cars, the Boxster and Cayman, have remained gasoline-powered. The internal combustion 718 models are set to end production in 2025, fueling widespread expectation of an electric successor.
Testing on Tesla's Network
The prototype was photographed at a Tesla Supercharger station in Carson, California, near the Porsche Experience Center Los Angeles. The car was plugged directly into the Supercharger using a NACS connector without an adapter. Two Porsche employees were reportedly inside the vehicle, suggesting an official test session.
Porsche EVs gained access to the Tesla Supercharger network in September 2025. Recent Porsche electric models feature dual charging ports: a NACS connector for DC fast charging and a J1772 port for AC charging. This Boxster prototype, however, appeared to have only a single NACS inlet at the rear center of the car.
Design Clues and Speculation
The vehicle was lightly camouflaged with plastic cladding at the front and rear and tape around the lights. The sighting follows a recent, mostly uncamouflaged appearance of the car at Germany's Nürburgring circuit. These public appearances indicate development is advancing.
The single NACS port could signal a shift in Porsche's charging strategy. It may mean the brand is moving to a NACS-only setup for both AC and DC charging, at least for its smaller sports car models. Larger four-door models might retain the dual-port configuration.
Official Stance and Project History
Despite the active testing, Porsche's official position remains non-committal. When contacted about the sighting, Porsche North America stated the model is still under consideration and that no announcements have been made regarding its sale or launch.
The project's future had been uncertain. Rumors earlier this year suggested the electric 718 might be canceled amid a broader industry pullback from EV investments. Those rumors were countered in August by Porsche's new CEO, Michael Leiters. He stated, "we will build the model, because it is the best solution economically and will be a fantastic car." The car is also expected to share a platform with an upcoming electric Audi TT.
The choice to test at a public Tesla Supercharger, rather than at the nearby Porsche facility's own chargers, appears deliberate. It points to validation of the vehicle's real-world compatibility with the expansive Tesla network, a key consideration for future customers. The test occurred at a large Supercharger site located in a hotel parking lot.
