Rivian R1S and R1T Get Major Free Software Update
Rivian is rolling out its RivianOS 2 software update for all R1S and R1T vehicles, bringing the infotainment system up to par with the newer R2 model at no

Rivian has released its largest over-the-air software update for the R1S SUV and R1T truck. The free 2026.31 update upgrades all first- and second-generation R1 vehicles to RivianOS 2, the same platform used in the new R2.
According to a company blog post, the overhaul makes the interface "faster" and "more intuitive." Rivian software chief Wassym Bensaid had previously indicated the software would come to the R1 platform to unify the fleet.
Unified Software Stack
Rivian states the update rebuilds the entire R1 experience on an AI-defined platform. "We've rebuilt the entire R1 experience on RivianOS 2-an AI-defined platform designed from the ground up-bringing state-of-the-art graphics, a redesigned interface layout, and deep compute integration directly to the cabin," the EV startup said.
The company emphasizes that RivianOS 2 now powers the entire lineup. This unified software stack means future improvements and feature updates can be shared across both the R1 and R2 models.
New Features and Interface
The update introduces a redesigned infotainment interface matching the R2. It includes updated controls, a new settings menu, and a universal search field. While Apple CarPlay remains unavailable, the system now integrates Google Maps and Waze alerts for police presence and speed cameras.
A new dedicated weather app has been added. Owners can also manipulate trip routing directly from the Rivian mobile app.
Graphics and Hardware Considerations
The update brings different graphical enhancements depending on the vehicle generation. Second-generation R1 models and the R2 now use Unreal Engine 5 for vehicle and environment graphics. First-generation R1 vehicles will stay on Unreal Engine 4 to preserve screen responsiveness.
Rivian acknowledges the limits of software updates. They cannot install faster computers or new sensors, which is why some buyers are waiting for the new RAP1 architecture in the R2. However, sharing the software stack allows continuous improvements across the model range.
Owners on forums like Reddit have expressed appreciation for the update, noting it makes their vehicles feel less outdated compared to the new R2. The move follows the industry trend, popularized by Tesla, of using over-the-air updates to enhance a vehicle's features long after purchase.
Rivian's goal is to keep the in-car experience fresh through seamless updates. The company confirmed that every improvement will now land across its unified platform, with capabilities tailored to each vehicle's specific hardware setup.
