Spotify launches native in-car app exclusively on Audi
Spotify's first fully native in-car app launches October 21, 2026, exclusively on Audi models via the Audi Application Store, offering a smartphone-free streaming experience.

Spotify is launching its first fully native in-car application exclusively on Audi vehicles starting October 21, 2026. The app will be available globally in 47 markets through the Audi Application Store, requiring no smartphone connection for playback.
Owners of supported Audi models can install the app directly from the car's infotainment store. This marks the first time a major streaming service has built a template-free, native app directly into a vehicle's system. The integration works through Android Automotive OS but operates independently of Google's design frameworks.
Full control of the user experience
Spotify asserts complete ownership over the app's interface and functionality. The company is not using standard Google templates for Android Automotive. Jonathan Tarlton, Spotify's head of automotive business development, explained the approach. "We're drawing all the pixels. We own the user experience. So we're not in a template or a framework." Tarlton said.
The app is described as headful, allowing full custom design. This native version will be available on both electric and combustion Audi models from the 2026 model year.
Vehicle compatibility and technical requirements
The app launches on newer Audi models based on the Premium Platform Electric and Premium Platform Combustion architectures. A smartphone is needed only for the initial sign-in via a QR code. After setup, the in-car experience is decoupled from personal devices. The app requires an active Audi connect package.
The initial compatible models are listed below. The Audi Q7 and Q9 SUV models will gain support at their respective market launches.
| Compatible Models | Powertrain |
|---|---|
| Audi A6 e-tron | Electric |
| Audi Q6 e-tron | Electric |
| Audi A5 | Combustion |
| Audi Q5 | Combustion |
| Audi A6 | Combustion |
In-car features and functionality
Voice commands are integrated for hands-free control. Drivers can use 'Hey Audi' to manage playback. The app can display music lyrics and video content on passenger screens or the central display when the vehicle is parked or charging.
Passengers can scan a QR code on the display to join a shared Spotify Jam session and add tracks from their own phones. On vehicles with a separate front passenger screen, supported features remain available even while the car is in motion. Spotify serves over 777 million users globally and reported 494 million ad-supported monthly users in the second quarter of 2026.
The app is available for both free and premium Spotify listeners through the Audi store at no extra cost. Spotify will continue to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, positioning this native app as a superior, integrated alternative. More car manufacturers are expected to adopt the app in the future.
The app will be available for download through the Audi Application Store starting October 21, 2026, with global rollout planned for 47 markets.
