Cheaper EVs Drive 45% Surge in European Electric Car Sales
Electric vehicle sales in the European Union jumped 45% through August 2026, reaching 1.64 million units and capturing 22% of the new car market.

Europe's electric vehicle sales have hit a new record this year. Electric car sales in the European Union reached 1.64 million units from January through August, up 45% year over year.
Transport & Environment, a Brussels-based environmental advocacy group, stated that "electric car sales in the European Union reached 1.64 million units from January through August, up 45% year over year." They accounted for roughly 22% of new cars sold in the EU.
Expanding model choice fuels adoption
The choice of electric models expanded by 50% compared to a year ago. European manufacturers added 16 new electric models in the first half of 2026, accounting for nearly 60% of available electric models.
This surge in options is a key driver of growth. Smaller, cheaper models are helping drive growth in EV sales as automakers introduced them to appeal to a broader customer base.
Affordability and regulation drive shift
Higher fuel prices are pushing Europeans to switch to electric. Tightening European Union emissions requirements and CO2 targets are also accelerating the rollout of new affordable EVs, influencing automaker strategies. Growing consumer demand contributed to the increased sales.
Affordable models gaining traction
Five of Europe’s top 20 best-selling EVs start below €30,000 based on German price before incentives. Transport & Environment forecasts that sales of electric models with starting prices below €25,000 will be seven times their 2024 level this year.
The group expects 16 models below €25,000 to be available by the end of 2026. That’s twice as many as last year. Renault exemplifies this trend, launching the 5 E-Tech, which became the EU’s third-best-selling EV in 2025 and the best-selling electric subcompact, followed by the even cheaper Twingo. Renault saw a 72.2% jump in EV sales in 2025 and a 63.2% rise in the first half of 2026.
New affordable models made strong showings in August registration figures:
| Model | August Registrations |
|---|---|
| Kia EV2 | 4,429 |
| Cupra Raval | 3,608 |
| Volkswagen ID. Polo | 1,876 |
Pricier EVs remain major sellers. According to August figures, the Tesla Model Y, Skoda Elroq, BMW iX1, BMW iX3, and Volkswagen ID.4 each notched over 6,000 registrations.
Competition intensifies as Chinese models expand
European carmakers face growing competition from Chinese manufacturers in their home market. Chinese automakers added 11 electric models in the first half of 2026 and represented 21% of available EV models in Europe.
Transport & Environment expects 16 models below €25,000 to be available by the end of 2026.
