Tesla postpones Roadster unveil to October 15 as production target slips
Tesla has rescheduled its next-generation Roadster demonstration to October 15 after weather forced a delay, but the event will feature a remote-controlled prototype, not a production vehicle, with manufacturing now targeted for 2027-2028.

Tesla will stream its next-generation Roadster event on Thursday, October 15, at 7:55 pm Central Time. The demonstration was postponed from an original October 1 date due to severe weather predictions in Texas, where the outdoor event is required.
On September 28, Tesla called off the proceedings, citing weather concerns monitored with local meteorologists. The company confirmed the new October 15 livestream time in a post on X the night before. This latest delay is part of a long history of postponements for the halo vehicle.
Demonstration reflects scaled-back ambitions
The October 15 event will feature a remote-controlled, non-street-legal prototype demonstrating a limited thruster-assisted hover. This is a scaled-down version of the original vision, which had teased a 'flying' car. The demo vehicle is not the originally promised sports car.
Tesla and Elon Musk have teased a SpaceX cold gas thruster system for the Roadster. Musk previously stated the new iteration will hit 60 mph in under one second using these thrusters. Tesla has also filed for a fan-car patent to create a vacuum under the vehicle, possibly for upside-down driving demonstrations. Long-term reservation holders are now waiting on an unproven prototype.
Production timeline continues to slip
Despite repeated promises, Tesla now targets Roadster production for 2027 or 2028. The prototype was first unveiled in November 2017 during the Tesla Semi event, with production initially promised for 2020.
Production has seen at least six delays since then. The timeline has been pushed to 2021, then 2022, and then 2023. In May 2023, Elon Musk said he hoped to begin production in 2024, emphasizing "this is not a commitment." By February 2024, he spoke of radically increased design goals, a demonstration by the end of 2024, and production in 2025. In November 2025, the start of production was officially postponed to 2027 or 2028.
The unveil date for this demonstration also slipped multiple times throughout 2025 and 2026. The demonstration highlights a nearly nine-year gap since the 2017 reveal. The vehicle's mechanics have transitioned to an aerospace-inspired project with a redesign featuring an angular aesthetic matching Tesla’s Cyber styling.
Original vision contrasts with current reality
The 2017 Roadster was promoted as a radically different vehicle from today's demo prototype. The original specifications presented a four-seat electric vehicle with a 620-mile range and a 0-60 mph time of 1.9 seconds.
Tesla collected reservations based on that original vision. The pricing and reservation structure was as follows:
| Model Variant | Reservation Price |
|---|---|
| Standard Reservation | $50,000 USD |
| Founders Series | $250,000 USD |
The original target price for the production car was $200,000. The point of the ambitious project, as one supporter noted, was "to just give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars."
Tesla will livestream the Roadster demonstration outdoors on October 15 at 7:55 p.m. Central Time.
